We need to talk about mental illness. In the US there are 38,000 suicides each year. Suicide is the third most common cause of death for people between 15 and 25, twice as common as homicide, and more common as a source of death than traffic fatalities.
Ninety percent (90%) of suicides are related to a mental illness (depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anorexia, border-line personality, etc.). More than one out of every 10 people battling depression commits suicide. And the problem is not limited to deaths; neoropsychiatric disorders account for 30 percent of morbid disability in the world (higher than heart disease, cancer or injuries). I encourage you to watch this short TED Talk and share it with others. We need to talk about mental illness.
